The book Caliban and the Witch: Women, the Body and Primitive Accumulation has been described as the “re-telling of the birth of capitalism, with women at the center of the story.” Silvia Federici sees capitalism not as some sort of liberating defeat of feudalism (like Karl Marx) but rather a reactionary move to subvert the rising tide of communalism. She asserts that capitalism was built and maintained around male violence against women.
This presentation and discussion will explore many themes from Caliban and the Witch, as well as Silvia Federici’s further research and writings on enclosures and the war against women.
NOTE: Silvia Federici will also join the STUDY IN ACTION opening panel on Friday, March 2, to speak on the topic “RE-CREATING THE COMMONS”. Her co-panelists include Suresh Naidu (Occupy Wall Street), Shannon Franssen (Solidarité St-Henri) and Julie Châteauvert (Les femmes ont faim). Info: https://qpirgconcordia.org/studyinaction/
Silvia Federici is a scholar, teacher, and activist. She is a member of the Midnight Notes Collective and the author of Caliban and the Witch: Women, the Body and Primitive Accumulation, as well as recent articles Women, Land Struggles and the Reconstruction of the Commons & Feminism and the Politics of the Commons
This event is presented by QPIRG Concordia, in collaboration with the Midnight Kitchen and the People’s Potato.
