(March 19) Anti-racist, feminist, anti-capitalist perspectives against the Charter

Anti-capitalist, anti-racist and feminist perspectives against the Charter
– first of a series, Self-determination(s) against State Repression (details below) –
Wednesday March 19th @ 7pm
A2580, UQAM (métro Berri-UQAM)
childcare and whisper translation EN-FR

Karl Kersplebedeb (anti-capitalist activist) will look at the immediate and long-term class dynamics at play in the Charter debate; how the Charter represents an attack on the anti-capitalist upsurge of 2012, but also a way of building unity between the middle class “left” and right as to “who gets to be boss” and “who had better watch their step” in 21st century Quebec.
Dolores Chew (member South Asian Women’s Community Centre; member CERAS (forum on South Asia); founder-member 8th March Committee of Women of Diverse Origins; History and Humanities instructor, Marianopolis College; Research Associate, Simone de Beauvoir Institute) will speak about  how ‘women’ historically have been the substance of debates that had little to do with them or in reality further marginalized them, with the so-called Charter of Values being a recent case in point.
Joël Pedeault (Queer organizer and member of Ensemble contre la Charte xénophobe) will discuss the (tacit or explicit) support that a certain progressive left in Quebec gives to the charter and what this reveals about how racism is expressed in Québec, as well as echos of the Charter within LGBTQ communities in Montreal.
