(September 1) Canada the Apartheid State: Myths and Realities / Building Resistance to Canada 2017

This presentation will expose some of the mythologies that uphold Canadian self-identity, focusing on exposing the apartheid realities in Canada, particular in relation to the treatment of Indigenous peoples. This will be followed by background to anti-Canada 2017 organizing, as well as ideas around building decentralized by coordinated campaigns to undermine the celebration of Canada. The underlining reasons for a concerted and public opposition to Canada will also be discussed. This session will also focus on the beginnings of a potential network for anti-Canada organizing. The year 2017 will mark the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation. Already, federal and local governments are spending multi-million dollar sums to celebrate and re-brand “Canada” in anticipation of 2017. The next three years will see a concerted attempt by the state to promote the idea of a beneficent and progressive “Canada”, locally and internationally, as well as to whitewash, literally, Canada’s past.
Co-presented by Clifton Arihwakehte Nicholas and Jaggi Singh. Clifton is a member of the Kanien’kehá:ka community of Kanehsatake and a documentary filmmaker. Jaggi is a community organizer, active with groups such as Solidarity Across Borders and the Justice for the Victims of Police Killings Coalition.
