– STUDY IN ACTION: An annual undergraduate and community research conference
– CALLOUT FOR SUBMISSIONS BY STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS

*** Deadline to submit: Sunday, February 14th at 11:59pm ***
STUDY IN ACTION is a grassroots research conference on social and environmental justice designed to link undergraduate students and community groups and activists. The conference is a space for students to present their work, develop greater knowledge of social and environmental justice issues, and build ties with community organizations.
Study in Action seeks to call into question a lot of the dominant perspective that gives legitimacy to traditional and academic forms of knowledge at the expense of non-traditional and non-academic forms of knowledge. We value both forms and encourage submissions that are both traditionally academic (written within the context and style of research papers) as well as those that are non-academic (personal narratives, performances, visual presentations, etc.)
This year’s conference will take place late March or early April at Concordia’s downtown campus.
Some themes discussed at past conferences include (but are not limited to):
– Indigenous sovereignty and decolonization
– Beyond governments: self-governance and democracy
– Economics, austerity, and anti-capitalism
– Incarceration and the prison industrial complex
– Bill 60 / The Quebec Charter of Values
– Accessibility
– Environmental justice and environmental racism
– Public space, poverty and gentrification
– Radical education and pedagogy
– Gender and feminism
– Sex and sexuality

SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS
The Study in Action conference is currently seeking both English and French submissions from undergraduate students Montreal and beyond! We are looking for submissions in diverse formats on a variety of topics. If you are currently working on, or have completed an essay, a research project, a group presentation or any other form of assignment on any topic relating to social and environmental justice, we encourage you to share it with us.
If you are no longer an undergrad we will accept your submission as long as it was something you wrote/created as an when you were an undergrad. Keep in mind that you don’t have to have received an ‘A’ on your submission – as long as you are interested in the topic and willing to develop a presentation we welcome your contributions.
Please note that it is not required that a completed project be submitted by the February 14th deadline; only a proposal is required together with a brief summary explaining how your submission relates to Study in Action’s mandate of social and environmental justice. Study in Action encourages submissions that are traditionally academic (written within the context and style of research papers) as well as submissions that are non-academic (personal narratives, performances, visual presentations, etc.).
Your conference presentation may be:
a) a 15-20 minute presentation or your essay or research findings on a panel
b) an hour-long group workshop
If you are worried or have questions about adapting your academic paper into a presentation, the Study in Action organizing committee will provide you with support and guidance.
