Study in Action: Linking Undergraduate Students and Activism, April 18th - 20th, 2008

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS!

-----------------------------------------------------

Are you an undergraduate student? Would you like the opportunity to share your much toiled over work? Would you like to make links between your work and social change?

If so, you're in luck! Study in Action, the second annual Montreal-based conference which aims to build ties between undergraduate students and community organizations, is looking for submissions!

At Study in Action, student presenters will have the opportunity to showcase work that reflects how undergraduate research can contribute to social change. This year, the conference’s overarching theme is Social and Environmental Justice, with suggested sub-topics including: colonialism, capitalism, and migration; sexuality; health and industrialization; gender; cultural imperialism; food justice; race, class, and the environment; labour and work; art activism; bodies and culture; and cities and social justice.

How do I submit work?

A word about the conference theme: Why social and environmental justice?

Movements for social justice include all peoples’ struggles for self-determination and against any form of social and economic domination, whether appearing as global power imbalance or local injustice.

Environmental justice-based approaches recognize that the effects of environmental degredation are not equally distributed across the world’s peoples; instead, the brunt of environment-based harm is borne by racialized communities, working class and impoverished people, indigenous peoples, and other populations marginalized by global systems of domination and inequality. Therefore, environmental justice requires that analysis and organizing around environmental issues follow principles of anti-oppression (or, anti-racist, anti-colonial, anti-sexist, anti-classist, and anti-neoliberal principles), and seeks pro-environment solutions that help redress inequality along all axes of domination.

The organizers of Study in Action hope to bring these two approaches together, first, to counter the belief that struggles against environmental destruction and social domination must be held apart, second, to highlight the concrete ways in which these struggles already play out together, and third, to point to potentials for increasing understanding, solidarity, and cooperation between social movements and pro-environment movements.

Study in Action Mission statement:

To foster ties between undergraduate students and the broader Montreal community in order to strengthen the spirit of social justice, promote undergraduate research, and emphasize links between the two.

Study in Action Vision:

Our vision is to provide an opportunity for students and for people outside the academic community to come together to work and discuss their approaches to social justice, and to create a forum for showcasing undergraduate research. The conference will not only benefit the undergraduate students and community organizations participating; we also envision building networks that will enrich student groups, university faculties and the broader Montreal university culture.

The conference will be a forum for students to engage in and present meaningful academic work that will benefit their communities as well as their prospective careers. This opportunity will encourage and aid students in their preparation for further studies or employment.

With a hope of energizing both communities in question, the conference also seeks to create concrete links between grassroots organization and undergraduate work by providing research and volunteer bases for community organizations to call on.

A word about French submissions:

We enthusiastically welcome French-language submissions! Though unfortunately the conference will not be fully bilingual this year, one of our most important long-term goals is to hold bilingual conferences in future years. This year, we still hope to showcase student work in French and to foster a welcoming environment for French-speaking students, wherein students doing social justice work in both French and English universities can come together to build ties and solidarity.
