>> :::Conference Wrap Dance Party and Praxis Journal Launch:::
Tuesday, April 15, 2008 - 07:06 PM
Sunday, April 20th - 9pm Cagibi - 5490 St. Laurent (northbound buses from either metro St. Laurent or Parc)(regretfully, this venue is not wheelchair accessible)Benefit Party for Barriere Lake Reserve
Join us for the end-of-conference party - plenty of good tunes with guest Montreal DJs. We'll also be celebrating the launch of the latest issue of Praxis Journal, an independently published journal of "student essays that are invested in, critical of, or relevant to radical politics"
Suggested donation is $5. Proceeds will go towards organizing efforts at the Barriere Lake Reserve. About recent events at Barriere Lake:For twenty difficult years, the small Algonquin community of Barriere Lake, 5 hours north of Montreal, has been struggling to hold the government to their word. In 1991, they signed a resource co-management and sustainable development agreement with Canada and Quebec to protect Algonquin practices on the land, to conserve the forest and wildlife, and to improve their dire economic situation. Instead of fulfilling their obligations, the Department of Indian Affairs has been playing divide and rule in Barriere Lake, wreaking havoc in the community by ousting the traditional Customary Chief Council and illegally appointing a more favourable faction as the leadership.http://www.barrierelakesolidarity.blogspot.com/
