Are you relatively new to social and ecological justice issues?
Are you interested in getting more active in making social and environmental change?
Do you want to deepen your awareness of different aspects of anti-oppression struggles?
Check out the QPIRG-C 101 Series
ecological and environmental justice * sexuality and gender * capitalism, the global economy and the financial crisis * racism (and anti-racism) in Canada
The QPIRG-C 101 Series allows people who are relatively new to social and ecological justice activism and organizing to get acquainted with issues in a welcoming and open environment. We have scheduled four 101s in February and March that are open to all members of the campus and community. The topics include: ecological and environmental issues; sexuality and gender; understanding capitalism and the "financial crisis"; and racism and anti-racism in Canada.
Please share this callout with anyone looking to get more involved in social and ecological justice issues. Consider attending just to deepen your own appreciation of the multi-faceted ways we fight against exploitation, and for liberation!
The schedule of the QPIRG 101s is listed below. No need to pre-register; just show up! All workshops are free.
The Roots of Ecological and Environmental Justice
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 7pm
at QPIRG-Concordia
(1500 de Maisonneuve Ouest, #204; beside Guy-Concordia metro)
Members of the Reclaim! working group will present a workshop outlining today's environmental issues in a framework that explores their underlying roots. This workshop will provide a critical analysis that is missing from much of the mainstream environmental movement that addresses historical social and global inequalities in relation to the current state of ecological crises.
Reclaim! is a non-hierarchical, consensus-based anti-capitalist environmentalism group. We encourage a diversity of tactics in - and a collective approach to - the struggle for a sustainable global culture and a healthy planet. We strive for an intersectional analysis, remaining conscious that ecological destruction disproportionately affects those oppressed by systems such as patriarchy, capitalism, and white supremacy.
Sexuality & Gender
(or, everything you always wanted to know about sex (and gender) but were afraid to ask)
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 7pm
at QPIRG-Concordia
(1500 de Maisonneuve Ouest, #204; beside Guy-Concordia metro)
A two-hour crash course on sexual and gender identities (what's the difference? why should I know?) as well as sexual health and safer sex (STIs, stigma and prevention). Bring your friends and questions.
Facilitated by Jos Porter and friends. Jos is a Health Animator with Head & Hands, a nonprofit organization in NDG dedicated to youth empowerment. Coming from a women's studies and social justice background, she provides sexual health education at a grassroots level through animating workshops, coordinating the Sense Project (an alternative sex ed project for high school students) and working in the medical clinic at Head & Hands. She works to promote awareness, open dialogue and sex positivity.
Mark your calendars:
