Disidentifications: Queers of Color and the Performance of Politics

Jose Esteban Munoz, University of Minnesota Press, 1999

Jose Esteban Munoz looks at how those outside the racial and sexual mainstream negotiate minority culture - not by aligning themselves with or against exclusionary works, but rather by transforming these works for their own cultural purposes. Munoz calls this process "disidentification". The book attempts to fashion a queer world by working on, with, and against dominant ideology. By examining the process of identification in film, performance art, ethnography, Cuban choteo, gay male mass culture, museums, art, photography, camp and drag, and telelvision, Munoz develops a new perspective on minority performance, survival and activism.

Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza (2nd edition)
Gloria Anzaldua, Aunt Lute Books 1999

This book deals with the actual physical borderland on the Texas-U.S., SouthWest/Mexican border, and moves into the psychological borderlands, the sexual borderlands and the spiritual borderlands that are not particular to the SouthWest. As the author states, "the Borderlands are physically present wherever two or more cultures edge each other, where people of different races occupy the same territory, where under, lower, middle and upper classes touch, where the space between two individuals shrinks with intimacy."
