Solidarity Across Borders is a Montreal-based network engaged in the struggle for justice and dignity of immigrants and refugees. We are comprised of migrants, immigrants, refugees and allies, and come together in support of our main demands: the regularization of all non-status people (Status for All!), an end to deportations and detentions, and the abolition of security certificates. Some of us have direct experiences with the immigration and refugee system; some of us come from immigrant backgrounds; all of us organize as part of a collective struggle for justice and dignity.
Project Description: Solidarity Across Borders is currently undertaking a long-term visioning process. As part of our visioning, we would like to have a good idea of the immigrant rights and services organizations in Montreal, and the work they are already doing, as a reference point for our own organizing. Essentially, we would like to ask any and all immigrant/refugee rights and service organizations the following questions:
Please describe your group/organization?
How long have you existed?
How did you come together?
How are you funded?
Do you receive any government funding?
Do you have paid staff?
What is your internal structure?
What is your membership? How do you make decisions?
What is your position on the demand that anyone who wishes to migrate should be able to do so freely?
Is there any particular reason why your group hasn't adopted this demand in the context of migrant justice work?
What kind of services do you provide?
What kind of organizing do you do?
What kind of migrant justice work do you do?
What are your goals and priorities?
What do you know of the organizing of Solidarity Across Borders?
What's your understanding of our work?
How does/can SAB relate to your organizing/services?
Is there any follow-up that should be undertaken between SAB and your organization?
We would like to contact and interview the following groups (if not more): Immigrant Workers Center, South Asian Women's Community Center, Patricia Perez Migrant Workers Support Center, Zimbabwean Community of Montreal,Coalition Catholique Congolaise de Montréal, PINAY, Siklab, Kapit Bisig Center, Philippine Women's Center, Centre des femmes d'ici et d'ailleurs, members of the CLSC-CdN, members of SARIM, Table de Concertation des refugies et immigrants à Montreal (TCRI), Comité aide aux réfugiés, Action réfugié Montreal, Canadian Council of Refugees, Montreal City Mission, Projet Refuge, Project Genesis, Head and Hands, OPDS Hochelaga, Stella, 2110 Center, Project 10, Comité d'action Parc Extension, and others.
Description of final product: Essentially, an information kit, compiling the responses to the questions above. A chart with categories could also be useful addition. It can be as long as necessary for complete responses to the above questions.
Education/skills required: English and French (preferably) oral and written skills. Curiosity, patience, interest in immigrant rights and social justice work.
