Canadian Government Support to Sri Lanka

Organization:
Tamil Action Committee

The Tamil Action Committee (TAC) is a local group which struggles for social justice for Tamil people, both at home and in the Tamil territories of Sri Lanka. The TAC was particularly active in mobilizing protests against the government-backed war against Tamil people in the spring of 2009. The Canadian government expressed its de facto support for the Sri Lankan government during this war by refusing to condemn the actions of the country’s military.

Project Description: The TAC requires research on links between the Canadian government and the Sri Lankan government. Particularly, they require research on military links (including military assistance and funding), engineering contracts and other corporate operations, and diplomatic relations. Some research would also be required on the position of the Canadian government vis-à-vis the Tamil Tigres. For example, what lead to the Tigres being listed on Canada’s terrorism list? What is their current position?

The TAC would like to work with the student working on this project to compile a report, and put the research findings online once they are completed. Content published online is to be decided on completion of the project, with the consent of the TAC.
