Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS): Crime & Impunity

Type of Research: Research Paper, Database

Research Description:

This project will compile information on criminal and scandalous activities of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) from its founding in 1984 to the present. It will attempt to track the consequences for CSIS of each scandal which has come to light. Finally, it will analyse the data according to a set of questions developed in collaboration with the People's Commission Network in the course of this project.

Part A. Scandalous activities and consequences for CSIS.

Drawing on a wide variety of public sources (literature review; media coverage; SIRC reports; internal Public Safety audits; court decisions and transcripts; interviews with activists and lawyers; reports by human rights and community organizations), information on CSIS misdemeanors will be gathered, synthesized, and categorized.

We are interested not only in illegal activities but any ""shocking"" behaviour: actions that are broadly held to be incompatible with justice and freedom. To narrow the scope of the research, we have categorized the kinds of activities that have in the past provoked public scandals. The following ten categories can be refined and modified in the course of the research, but serve as an initial basis:

Enquête sur les jurys de pairs - RCAAQ

Organization:

On-line Human Resource Catalogue for LaSalle-Gardens Community Investment & Exchange System CIES

Organization:
LaSalle-Gardens Community

Type of Research:

Computer Related

Research Description:

Computer science and accounting students are setting up a local on-line economy similar to an e-Bay system with local community management and operation, monitoring for quality control.  We have members of our community organized presently in a local committee with skills, talents and training to operate web-systems.  Some training of committee members will be necessary.   The students will be able to charge market rates for their web-building / accounting system services, which will be entered into a personal account.  The CIES system is required to reach a critical number of transactions before any shares are able to be liquidated.  Each Person Hour Share PHS is a voting share.  Shares in our system are evaluated at the rate of Quebec's minimum wage (approx 10$ / hour) for basic unskilled labor, while complex skills such as web-building are accredited market rates as multiples of the PHS.

Kitchen Exchange - Not only a cooking club but a group that offers cultural exchange and solidarity.

Organization:
Association des aides familiales du Québec - Caregivers Association of Quebec

Type of Research:

Program Design

Project Description:

Our members (domestic workers) have expressed an interest in starting a cooking club where they can share recipes, cook together on a budget. If possible, they would also like to learn cooking skills to be able to obtain a certificate at the end of the course.

We will share the results of this experience with our partners whose members often have integration, financial and isolation issues. They may use this program as a model to teach others how to meal plan and budget. The developments of the project will be posted on our website and space will be reserved in our newsletter for the participants or organizing students.

Organic Pest Control Researcher - Concordia Greenhouse

Organization:
Concordia Greenhouse

Type of Research:

Paper, Feasibility Study, Evaluation Report

About the Project:

The basis of this project is to help us to evaluate the efficacy of our pest control programme we recently enacted.  The new programme is based the principles of Integrated Pest Management and is heavily reliant on biological controls (predator insects) to control the populations of pest insects (in this case mainly white flies, aphids and mealy bugs).

To evaluate its efficacy we need someone to collect data on the pest and predator populations as well as the health of the plants, and create a report indicating where the pest control programme failed, succeeded and recommendations for the future of the programme.

The researcher will work closely with the greenhouse Pest and Horticulture Coordinator and Projects Coordinator.
