Policy, Urban Space and Displacement in Montreal - Right to the City Montreal

Organization:
Right to the City Montreal

Project Description:

20 page research paper with presentation to the general public in a community workshop.

"Montreal is experiencing rapid change to its urban spaces and neighborhoods. Traditionally working class/immigrant neighborhoods are experiencing economic pressure from more privileged new residents, resulting in a pattern of displacement. Some of this pressure is the result of the city's transition to a post-industrial economy. However, much of it is also the result of deliberate policies at the municipal and provincial level. The project will look at policies behind urban displacement in either Parc-Extension, Mile End, or St. Henri and offer practical solutions for community groups based on the information. For instance, the student might investigate whether zoning and tax law encourages the building of condominiums rather than rental apartments, or the reasons behind the lack of new co-op housing and the best ways to lobby for more. The exact project will be based on the students' interests and experience.
