Study on Quebec Recruitment Agencies of Domestic Workers - PINAY

Organization:
PINAY

Project Description:

Conduct surveys for a study on Quebec Recruitment Agencies and their involvement in the exploitation, racism, and harassment of migrant workers and to develop a report on the analysis and recommendation as per a collective discussion from respondents.

This project was started last school year by two Concordia students and a lot has been accomplished. A questionnaire has been finalized after this model was approved by a Concordia University ethics board.

Reproduction of this questionnaire was done and the plan was to start the collection of information by filling up the forms by recruitment users. Unfortunately, this stage did not materialize as planned this summer. We would like to continue this project to the end.

We would like to use the result of this project as an organizing tool in the empowerment of migrant workers in general and in our community in particular. Numerous Filipinos migrate to Canada under the TFWP who can benefit from this project.

Organization:
Milton Parc Ad Hoc Committee to Save Parc Oxygène

For 22 years, local residents have fought to save a precious inner-city green space located between Park and Hutchison, Pine and Prince Arthur in the Milton Parc neighbourhood. The community-built and maintained park is now in danger of being sold to a developer who plans to destroy it and turn it into condos.

The Milton Parc Ad Hoc Committee to Save Parc Oxygène is a local residents group comprised of members of the Milton Parc non-profit housing coop project, and good neighbours.

The community group needs help to mobilize local residents, other community groups,  as well as students at Concordia and McGill who might be interested in the issue, raise public awareness through social media and other media,  help organize public actions, research similar precedents in Montreal and elsewhere.

WHAT KIND OF STUDENT IS THE GROUP LOOKING FOR?

Ideally, someone who is bilingual, environmentally conscious, with social media skills, loves to organize, recognizes the importance of this kind of community struggle.

TIMELINE:

To start immediately, because the threat of a condominium development is real.

The Center runs under the leadership of the Provisionary Administrative Council comprising of Ville de Montreal, Prevention NDG and Comite Jeunesse NDG. Walkley Community Center has been providing programs for children, teens and adults.

Research description:

A needs assessment concerning the Walkley Street and neighboring streets is being planned. Residents of the community will be visited in their homes and will be asked to respond to a series of questions which will help us to formulate programs and activities that will benefit the community at large. Residents will be asked what kind of activities they would like to see at the center based on the current space. This will be a door-to-door questionnaire campaign.

The research student will be provided with a questionnaire (attached separately) and they are required to obtain responses from the residents by asking the questions verbally. The responses should be recorded on the questionnaire.
