A Public Statement of Support for Jaggi Singh

We, the board of directors of the Quebec Public and Interest Research Group (QPIRG) Concordia are writing in support of Jaggi Singh on the day of his sentencing hearing for charges related to the G20 in Toronto of last year.
QPIRG Concordia works from an anti-oppressive mandate and Jaggi fully embodies this practice, not only in his work, but also in his daily life, believing that every voice deserves to be heard. His values compel him to stand behind and fight for many diverse struggles, such as anti-racism, international solidarity, feminism, indigenous sovereignty and queer rights. His struggle in solidarity with these varied communities consistently brings people together in the spirit of open dialogue and growth. Jaggi’s values are what make him not only a great colleague but also an incredible friend. He has made each and every one of us feel valued in our position as volunteer board members. He has proven time and again to be open to discussion, making sure that all voices are given equal weight, and welcomes hearing and learning from different points of view.
Jaggi is an ideal person to have at the heart of our organization as he himself spent many years as a working group volunteer and continues to volunteer his time with many of them (Solidarity Across Borders, The Montreal Childcare Collective, The Indigenous Solidarity Committee). Indeed, Jaggi’s commitment to environmental and social justice struggles means that he spends many hours a week volunteering with related organizations and groups in order to give back to the community.
Jaggi effectively links the Concordia student population with the broader Montreal community, creating necessary links between academia and the city in which it is situated. Furthermore, he is a warm and caring individual who makes the QPIRG Concordia office a much brighter place. His brilliant sense of humour and profound knowledge base mean that he can always be depended on for a joke and a meaningful story. He is a truly valued employee and we look forward to continuing to work with him at QPIRG Concordia for months and years to come.
Sincerely,
QPIRG Concordia 2010-2011 Board of Directors
