Be!zarre Ball: The Science Fantasy Edition:
How to make your effect! Hands on Workshop (not just for Bizarre!)

Have you been excited about the idea of walking Bizarre, but feel like you aren’t crafty? Guess what… Anybody can do it! Let us share some of our tips & tricks, and introduce you to how easy it is to create. These are skills that can be applied for an effect in any category.

All materials will be provided for, and you can take anything home that you want!

Featuring Bizarre royalty Moohk Louboutin, Skittlez Poseida, & Riri 007

PART 1 - What is Bizarre?

Brief introduction to the Bizarre category. What it is, where it came from, who are the legends & icons of this category.

PART 2 - Planning & Construction

Lookbooks, moodboards, mind-maps & sketch books!
The anatomy of an effect that will make the judges GAG!

PART 3 - Making It Work!

Materials and how to make stuff.
Participants will be shown different kinds of ways to construct an effect, and will learn some basic skills.

PART 4 - Bring it to the judges!

We will do a mini-kiki ball with our creations.

**QPIRG is accessible for people with reduced mobility. If you would like ASL or French translation and/or childcare, please let us know!

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The DisOrientation Coordinator will work in collaboration with QPIRG staff and volunteers. The main tasks of the position include planning, organizing, and promoting QPIRG’s alternative orientation program. DisOrientation is a free alternative orientation at the Concordia University downtown campus for new and returning students, members of the campus & the community. In the past, DisOrientation has included a wide range of activities for all interests, including introductory workshops on social and environmental justice, readings, film screenings, music, a comedy show, a radical history bike tour and more!

Bizarre Kin will take you to the farthest reaches of imagination. Join us as we break apart what ‘normal’ means by becoming a community of strange, fantastical, & frightening creatures together.
Ballroom is a safe space for all queer people, and being bizarre is the queerest of them all. The Be!zarre Kiki Ball is a celebration of inventive and over the top fashion, where you can be whoever (or whatever) you want to be. For this evening, each category is calling for a bizarre element! Fadel Saad Ismail Al-Saifi reached out to Rain, a community member in Montréal, on Facebook some weeks ago. Rain and his friends have been raising money for Fadel’s personal expenses since then. Fadel and his entire family were displaced from Gaza due to bombing destroying their homes and Fadel’s business. But now Fadel has to leave Rafah in order to make money to send back to his family.

A company called Hala Consulting and Tourism charges individual Palestinians $5,000 USD (~$7,000 CAD) for safe passage to Egypt. It’s predatory and weird, but it is Fadel’s only hope. Any amount helps.

This course will be an introduction to American Sign Language – no previous knowledge of ASL required! The course will include introductory vocabulary and grammar, as well as an introduction to Deaf culture.

DATE and TIME: Thursdays from 5pm-8pm, starting February 8th and running weekly until April 18th, with not class on March 7th.

The class will take place via Zoom.

Cost: Sliding scale $0-$150 for the full course (no one turned away for lack of ability to pay, D/deaf and Hard of Hearing folks are not expected to pay).

As a rough guideline for our sliding scale:

$0-$50 I am low income

$50-100 I can afford to cover my place in the class

$100-$150 I have class privilege and can help cover the cost for people who can't pay for the course

While QPIRG is able to fully cover the cost of the course if needed, we appreciate any contributions that people are able to afford so we can continue to offer these classes.

Registration is limited to a maximum of 16 students (at the request of the teacher). We will prioritize places in the class for D/deaf and Hard of Hearing folks, as well as disabled people who are wanting to learn ASL for communication reasons not related to hearing loss, people who might not otherwise have access to ASL classes due to financial or other reasons and people who were on the wait list for a previous class. Otherwise, we will fill spots in the order people fill out the form.

This course is open to the general public, not only Concordia students.

PLEASE NOTE: We've had some issues in recent years of people registering but then only attending a few of the classes and this ultimately can take away a space from someone who could have completed the full course. If you register and are put in the class but attend less than half of the classes, we will request you cover the roughly $100 to that your space in the class has cost us.
